The Australian

Based in Sydney, The Australian is a nationl newspaper serving all of Australia. When Rupert Murdoch started it in 1964, many critics claimed a newspaper serving such a large area would never survive against the local newspapers serving individual ciites.

Murdoch's determination and daring attitude when he launched the paper, his first ever newspaper launch, payed off very well. The newspaper was a success, providing comprehensive coverage of national issues and provoking national debate.

Historian Geoffrey Searle wrote in his book The Creative Spirit of Australia that the introduction of The Australian required metropolitan dailies such Fairfax's Sydney Morning Herald and The Age to increase their standards.

The Australian has a approximate daily circulation 130,000 and approximate readership of 460,000. The Saturday edition, The Weekend Australian has an approximate circulation of 295,000 and an approximate readership of 915,000. Both papers appeal to a wealthier target advertising market.
