A magazine is a periodical publication, usually released at regular intervals such as a week or a month. It is published in paperback on glossy paper or newsprint. The purpose of a magazine is to provide a variety of articles, photographs, fictional stories and essays.
The word magazine originates from the Arabic word makhazin, meaning storehouses (via Italian and French). This means that magazines are 'storehouses' of articles and photographs. By comparison to journals, magazines focus more on entertainment and current events than education and academic research. Their use is usually intended from recreation more than for education.
Magazines that are electronically distributed through the world wide web and email are known as e-zines. It is often cheaper to publish material electronically than through print.
