- One player or "drawer" picks a word. He/she then writes down an underscore to represent each letter in the word.
- Other players may select any word of the alphabet or make a guess as to what word has been picked. When a correct letter is stated, it must be written down. When an incorrect letter or guess is stated, another feature may be added to the gallows and a hanged man.
- The first person to correctly guess the word or the final letter required to construct the word wins the game and becomes the "drawer" in further rounds.
- If the "drawer" successfully draws the gallows and hanged man image, they win the game and may continue in their position as "drawer".
